Puzzle-Filled, Immersive Reception at an Intimate Alternative Wedding in New Hampshire
Blending Love, Lore, & Locks
Rose and Blackwell weren't planning a typical wedding. Dressed all in black, with a handfasting ceremony blending Norse and Celtic traditions, their gothic celebration was deeply personal, filled with meaningful DIY touches.
But when it came to their reception, they needed help making it feel just as authentic and purposeful. Traditional wedding receptions didn't appeal to them; they wanted something more creative, immersive, and interactive. And as a microwedding with just 30 people, they wanted to create an intimate and engaging atmosphere emblematic of their unique style.
As fans of escape rooms and board games, they dreamed of a puzzle-filled experience that would bring their guests together in an unforgettable way...but they weren't sure how to bring their ideas to life. That's where we came in!
More than Entertainment...a Shared Adventure!
We worked closely with Rose and Blackwell to design a custom puzzle experience tailored to their interests. Each table had its own unique puzzle set, inspired by their favorite themes:
- Edgar Allan Poe (for the head table), featuring a keepsake raven they adored
- Dungeons & Dragons, complete with a "magic potion" element
- Celtic Mythology, with a Stonehenge-inspired 3D construction puzzle
- Lord of the Rings, centered around a bespoke jigsaw puzzle and travels around Middle Earth
- Cows, an adorable theme aligned with both Ireland and New England, featuring disappearing ink clues
But we didn't stop there. To ensure maximum interaction and engagement, we placed key puzzle pieces at different tables, encouraging guests to move around, collaborate, and uncover clues together. The final challenge? Combining all their answers to unlock a treasure chest, revealing the couple's custom wedding favors: talismans we made based on a design hand-drawn by the mother of the groom (also used in the bespoke wax seal stamp we made them) and bottles of locally made maple syrup.
Throughout the night, we were on hand to provide hints when needed, making sure every guest (whether a seasoned puzzle solver or a total newbie) felt included and engaged. By incorporating tactile elements - like pouring potions or revealing hidden messages with the heat of their fingers - the experience was accessible and fun, even for guests who had never considered themselves "puzzle people."
Bringing the Magic
From the moment guests sat down, curiosity took over. Groups huddled together, whispering theories, swapping puzzle pieces, and cheering each other on. Even those unfamiliar with escape room-style games found themselves drawn into the excitement.
The final reveal of the treasure chest brought a round of cheers, and the couple's unique favors were the perfect finishing touch.
For Rose and Blackwell, it was exactly what they had envisioned: a wedding reception that felt like an adventure - one where their guests became part of the story. Rose later told us: "Gorgeous work, amazing puzzles - our wedding wouldn't have been as magical without your help!"
From start to finish, every detail of their night reflected who they were...not just as a couple, but as storytellers, puzzle lovers, and dreamers who wanted something truly them.
